Install a nest box

  • Installation: before 10 March 2014.
  • Height: between 6 and 10 feet (2 to 3 m).
  • Orientation: hole in the nesting box facing southeast to avoid exposure to prevailing winds.
  • Method of attachment: Ideally, use two attachment points, one at the top and one at the bottom (material not provided due to variations in location).
  • How to fix the nesting box: with screws, wood screws or hooks. You can double the back of the nesting box with another size of board if necessary.
  • Where to attach the nest box: at a tree (use rope or fabric towing cables to go around the tree), at a building or on a 4x4 or 6x6 type post, such as a gallery post.
  • Once the nest box is installed:
    • Do not modify the appearance of your nesting box (do not paint or decorate).
    • Do not move or store your nesting box in the fall... the chances of having a brood will increase with time.
    • Clean the nest box in the fall when the nestlings have left the nest.
    • Keep the pine casserole or the piece of wood connected to a nylon string. This device will be used at the end of the season to capture and mark the adults. This operation will be carried out by a scientist in your presence.
